These magnetic pattern blocks are a great option for very young children as they lessen the frustration of the blocks moving around, and they’d be great for travel too! You can put the printable pattern block templates over the magnetic base and then build on top.

Using the Spring Pattern Block Mats with Preschoolers
Preschoolers and young children who are just beginning with pattern blocks will find the coloured pattern block templates the easiest the use.
These pattern block mats print to scale (see the printing instructions) so children can place the correct block directly onto the mat, copying the design to make the picture.
You can extend your child’s learning by talking about the colours and shapes of each block and show them how to ‘flip’ and ‘rotate’ blocks. Naming each shape is a great early math concept to work on and you could also count the number of blocks you use to make each picture.

Using The Spring Pattern Block Templates with Older Children.
Older kids love pattern blocks, they make a fun, hands-on maths activity for kindergarten and older grades.
Depending on their level and experience, older kids will enjoy using the coloured pattern block mats, or the outline pattern blocks for an extra challenge.
The outline pattern block mats print to scale (see below for printing instructions) so kids can build the pictures directly onto the mat, but they require a little extra thinking to decide which block fits the shape without the colours to help. This extra challenge is great for working on spatial awareness.
Older kids are able to identify the colour of each block, name the shapes, and count the number of each shape they used to make the picture. They will also love the challenge of coming up with their own fall pattern block designs to make and share.

Free Printable Spring Pattern Block Templates.
There are four different spring pattern block templates to choose from – two different flowers, an umbrella, and a kite. Each one comes in a full colour version and a version that is just the outlines.
These spring pattern block mats are made to scale, so the blocks printed on the templates are the same size as the actual pattern blocks, this means children can build on top of the mats if they would like to.

Instructions for Printing Pattern Block Mats
These printable pattern block mats are all A4 sized pdf files, you will need a pdf reader such as adobe acrobat to open them. They will fit to print on US ‘letter sized’ paper.
Please choose ‘Actual Size’ from your printer settings. Do not select ‘fit’ or ‘shrink to fit’ from your printer settings regardless of what size paper you are using. If you get a message saying ‘image is larger than the paper’s printable area’ you can safely ignore this so that the pattern block mats print at the correct size.
